The Baerwaldbad - Conservation of a Public Bath House through Vocational Training

The Baerwaldbad public bath house was built in 1901 by architect Ludwig Hoffmann, to meet the sanitation needs of the working class district of Berlin Kreuzberg. After 100 years of use it was shut down by the government in 2002 due to rising costs and falling profitability. The sports association TSB e. V. was formed from an alliance of local sports associations expressly for the purpose of running the bath, and has done so for eight years, mostly by voluntary work.
The entrance area as well as the roof and facades of the small indoor swimming pool, which remained undamaged in the war, need renovating, which must be done in accordance with guidelines for the renovation of historical monuments. Due to lack of funds, alternative methods had to be found for carrying out the structural maintenance of the historic building.
Thus “Project Baerwaldbad” was created to make the suitable restoration of the more than 100-year-old listed public bath house possible. The activities grouped together under the title “Project Baerwaldbad” principally include those geared towards the vocational education and career orientation, as well as the employment, of young adults in the construction industry.
Since 2007 Zukunftsbau GmbH, a non-profit, youth support and recognised training company, has run projects which combine on-the-job training and employment for young people with the renovation of this historically listed and protected building. These endeavours were rewarded in 2010 with the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award in the category “Education, Vocational Education and Raising Awareness”.
With the cooperation of Zukunftsbau GmbH and L.I.S.T. GmbH, and the support of public institutions and different co-operation partners, the Baerwaldbad monument should be secured for future use and remain an important testimony to Berlin’s cultural history.
